Red flags

When should you stop and call a professional?

Some jobs are past a DIY fix. If you see any of these, stop and pick up the phone. Waiting turns a simple fix into a full replacement, or worse.

  • A shutter panel sags at the hinge, rattles loose, or a louver has popped out of its pivot pin. A panel that has come loose from its frame can eventually fall, and forcing a bent hinge back into place usually causes more damage than it fixes.

  • A roller or cellular shade takes noticeably more force to raise or lower than it used to, or will not catch at all after you have reset the spring tension. Forcing a jammed mechanism can crack the tube or tear the fabric, turning a simple fix into a full replacement.

  • You are measuring or working on a second-story window, a stairwell window, or anything that requires a ladder to reach safely. A free in-home measure comes with most custom orders, so there is little reason to take a fall risk on a hard-to-reach opening.

  • You are installing a motorized shade that requires new wiring or a hardwired power connection rather than a battery pack or plug-in transformer. That crosses into electrical work and needs a licensed electrician, not a DIY install.

  • You are planning a hurricane-rated shutter install that involves anchoring into stucco, block, or structural framing. Depending on scope, this can fall under Florida building permit rules, and it is worth confirming with your local building department before work starts.

  • You have young children or grandchildren visiting regularly and still have looped or dangling cords on any blinds in the house. Treat this as a same-week fix, not a someday project.
