How to Clean and Maintain Plantation Shutters

Real wood shutters hold up for decades in Florida's climate, but only if they get the right kind of care. Here is the maintenance routine that keeps them looking new.

How to Clean and Maintain Plantation Shutters

The Weekly Dusting, Monthly Deep Clean Routine

Tilt the louvers fully closed and run a vacuum with a soft brush attachment, or a microfiber duster, along the top edge of each slat, closed louvers catch dust the same way a closed book keeps dust off its pages. Do this weekly if you can, since dust that builds up on shutters in a sunny Pinellas room tends to bake on and gets harder to remove the longer it sits. Once a month, wipe each louver with a barely damp microfiber cloth and a small amount of mild soap and water, then dry immediately with a second cloth. Never spray cleaner directly onto wood shutters, moisture pooling in the louver joints is what eventually warps them.

Protecting Real Wood Shutters from Florida Humidity

Wood shutters and Florida's humidity are not natural enemies, but only if the room stays climate-controlled. Keep the AC running consistently rather than letting a room swing between cold and shut-off-and-humid, repeated humidity cycling is what causes wood to swell, stick, and eventually crack at the joints. Skip ammonia-based glass cleaners and anything with bleach near wood shutters, both strip the factory finish faster than normal wear ever would. If a shutter is near a lanai door or a window that catches rain spray during storms, wipe any moisture off promptly rather than letting it sit against the wood.

When Hinges, Louvers, or Tilt Rods Need Attention

A louver that will not stay at the angle you set it usually means a loose pivot pin, tightening it is often a five-minute fix with a small screwdriver, turn clockwise in quarter turns and test the tilt after each turn. Hinges that squeak or feel loose at the frame can usually be re-tightened the same way. Stop and call a pro if an entire panel sags at the hinge side, rattles when the AC kicks on, or a louver has popped fully out of its pin, a shutter panel that has come loose from its frame can eventually fall, and forcing a stuck or bent hinge back into place often does more damage than leaving it for a professional repair visit.
